Creative Skillset have joined up with us to run our annual Animation Industry Event and we’ve got all manner of topics being covered, by special guests from a wide range of very different areas. Each of them are ready to impart their knowledge and answer your questions in four carefully chosen panel sessions. In an industry that thrives on novelty and fast turnover, many companies burn bright and then burn out. Other companies seem to constantly refresh what they are doing and surprise clients and viewers alike. We’ve got together a bunch of decade old operators, some who oscillate between their own individual artistic practice and the corporate shilling to stay fresh, and some who have stayed one step ahead of the trends of the day, producing a wide range of ads, title sequences, music videos alongside their own independent films.
What’s the secret of their staying power, and how do they keep a spring in their step? What have they learnt about resilience in a notoriously fluctuating industry, and what advice do they have for today’s new talent?

Ruth Fielding – Joint Managing Director of Lupus Films
Ruth Fielding is joint Managing Director of Lupus Films an independent TV production company based in Islington. Ruth’s most recent credit is Producer of Channel 4’s hit Christmas Special, The Snowman and the Snowdog which reached an audience of 11million people across the UK in December 2012. Through Lupus Films, Ruth has produced animation and live-action shows for the BBC, Channel Five, UKTV, Channel 4, ITV and Disney. She was the Producer of the CGI re-make of children’s classic The Pinky & Perky Show for the BBC and France 3 and Executive Producer on Lupus’ most recent series for Disney Junior worldwide, The Hive. Through Channel 4’s late night Arts strand, Random Acts, Ruth has commissioned 60 short animated films within the last two years, and she is about to start production on a new pre-school animation series for Channel 5 called Toot the Tiny Tugboat. Before setting up Lupus Films in 2002, with her friend and colleague Camilla Deakin, she was Assistant Editor for Arts and Animation at Channel 4. Ruth was a member of the UK Treasury’s Working Group consulting on the Animation Tax Breaks for Television and is currently Vice Chair for the Animation Board at Creative Skillset.

Richard Barnett – Producer/MD at Trunk Animation
Richard Barnett graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in 2002 and joined animation production company Slinky Pictures. In four years he worked his way up from the Runner to Production Manager. In early 2006, Richard joined Trunk Animation as it’s sole producer and went on to produce many award winning projects including a BAFTA winning short and a BAFTA nominated documentary, as well as winning a British Animation Award, and two Awards at Annecy among many others.
In early 2010 Richard became co-owner and MD of Trunk animation, revitalising the company with his ambition and drive. He has produced stop motion and live action projects, overseen the projection of animation onto Buckingham Palace, dressed up as Donald Duck for an Elton John video, got his head around producing 3D stereoscopic animation, and still found the time to make cups of tea for interns. From the Rolling Stones to Coca Cola, Land Rover, Jaguar and Monty Python, Richard’s knowledge and experience as a producer is vast. He has talked at festivals around the world and been a judge at the UK MVA’s for the last 4 years, and this year was noted as one of the 1000 most influential Londoners by the Evening Standard.

Maria Manton – Producer and Director at Munky
Maria Manton is Producer and Director at Munky. An animation survivor, she started in 1994 as a Producer at the legendary company Bermuda Shorts.
Munky are a super creative Emmy nominated visual effects post production hub. With work spanning VFX, animation, shoot supervision, production and grading, this summer say them working on Robbie Williams and Dizzee Rascal’s ‘Going Crazy’ as well as producing Nuke software masterclasses for the industry and the Peter Serafinowicz directed internet skit for Daft Punk’s single Get Lucky.
