LIAF 2022 is just under 10 weeks away and we can’t wait to get back into cinemas and share with you the amazing films we’ve been watching all year long. This years’ festival will take place across London at 5 wonderful venues but for those who are unable to join us in the flesh from November 25 to December 4 we will also have an extensive online programme made available for everyone.
Our programmers have been sifting through the 2,400 films that came our way this year and after much deliberation, head-scratching and tired eyes we have hand-picked 86 films from 30 countries to screen in the 8 international competition programmes, many of them premieres.
In this, our 19th festival, there will be a healthy mix of returning master animators to LIAF with their latest gems alongside many newcomers to the scene. Previous LIAF audience members will recognise names such as Emma Calder, Atsushi Wada, Andreas Hykade, Ainslie Henderson, Reka Bucsi, Steven Woloshen, Joseph Wallace, Joseph Pierce, Liz Hobbs, Amanda Forbis & Wendy Tilby and Priit Tender returning with their latest films. And we are also very excited to give a platform to many first-time filmmakers and graduate animators. Our mission, as ever, is to show that animation is the most imaginative of all art forms and when the handbrake is off anything can happen.
The competition films will screen in 8 themed programmes such as the Abstract Showcase, Into the Dark, Animated Documentaries and From Absurd to Zany. Subject matter is as varied as ever but LIAF wouldn’t be LIAF without a healthy dose of surreality and general all-round bonkers-ness to mash up your brain.
Outside of the international competition programmes we will also be screening our ever-popular and returning programmes the British Showcase, Music Videos, Late Night Bizarre, Best of the Next (student films), Edge of Frame, Figures in Focus and kids and families programmes alongside special guests, two feature films and two days of free online industry talks. Full line-ups to be announced soon, along with stills, synopses and trailers. Stay tuned!
