Some films need extra time to develop their themes, to grow and draw us more comprehensively into their worlds. It takes time to think. Reflection tends to work best at a slower tempo. This competition programme is dedicated to showcasing the best of these longer films. Seven longer short films, seven intensely thoughtful stories including the latest masterworks from returning LIAF favourites Joanna Quinn, Michelle and Uri Kranot and Leonid Schmelkov.
Independent animation is an art form that continues to thrive and develop as a breathtaking medley of styles, materials, techniques and production – from hand-drawn, paint on glass, collage, sculpture, cut-outs, puppets, abstract to some of the more interesting developments in CGI – all of which can be seen at this year’s LIAF.
We’ve emerged from under the pile of 2,400 entries to put together a series of screenings that showcase the best 80 new films from every corner of the world. They can be funny, dramatic, bizarre, subdued, scary or autobiographical. The one thing they have in common is that we think they’re the pick of the crop.

Affairs of the Art – Joanna Quinn, UK
How many obsessions can one family have? Beryl, our working-class heroine reveals her own obsession with drawing and also exposes the addictions of her eccentric family, which include pickling, screw threads and pet taxidermy.

An elderly woman lies paralysed and bedridden while, within earshot, her family struggles to agree on the best way to take care of her.

Shell in Love – Svilen Dimitrov, Bulgaria
A timid snail, scarred by childhood trauma, spends its time hiding away in its shell where he has created an imaginary version of the outside world. After a chance encounter with love he will have to face his fears and discover the wonders of reality.

A Most Exquisite Man – Jonas Taul, Estonia
There exists somewhere a most exquisite man yet something within him is restless. Big questions consume him, leading to a place where all he can do is surrender his life, in order to find concluding peace.
