LIAF 2014 Andreas Hykade Retrospective + Q & A

September 10, 2014 by LIAF

Andreas Hykade (born 1968 in Bavaria, Germany) is one of the most talented and original voices in animation today. He studied animation at the prestigious Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg until 1995 and has since created a series of commercials, TV projects and animated films mostly for adults. Among his films are We Lived in Grass (1996, German Short Film Award), Ring of Fire (2000), The Runt (2007, German Short Film Award, FIPRESCI Award Annecy) and Love & Theft (2010, German Short Film Award, Sacem Award for original music, Annecy 2011).

He has also created a series of animated films for children, Tom & the slice of bread with strawberry jam & honey (2001 – 2012), also screening at LIAF. Since 2000, he has been teaching animation at various institutions, such as Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, Royal College of Art London, Kunsthochschule Kassel and Harvard University. He is the only director to have won the German short film prize three times, and his works have been honoured by retrospectives around the world, at festivals such as Ottawa Festival, Holland Animation Festival and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

He has also worked with the German band Die Toten Hosen making several video clips, collaborated with British animation artist Ged Haney and has created Zukenftsvisionen, the film installations for the German pavilion at the World Exhibition EXPO 2000. Andreas is also a Professor for Animation Film at the Institute of Animation, Visual Effects and Digital Animation in Germany and at Harvard University, USA.

Andreas Hykade will be joining LIAF Director Nag Vladermersky for a Q & A after the screening of his films.

We’ll also be screening Tom & the Slice of Bread with Strawberry Jam and Honey, complete with an introduction by Andreas. As well as this, Andreas will also be running an Animation Masterclass Both are on 1 November.

Thank you to the Goethe Institute for making the visit of Andreas Hykade to LIAF possible.
