LIAF 2024: Opening Night – Boys Go To Jupiter (15) UK PREMIERE + Screentalk with Director Julian Glander (via Zoom)

September 29, 2024 by

The London International Animation Festival is back for our 21st edition and we are super-excited to be opening our festival at the Barbican with the UK premiere of the smash independent American animated feature ‘Boys Go To Jupiter’ directed by Julian Glander.

Set in the transitional days between Christmas and New Year’s, the story follows Billy 5000, a teenage gig worker driven by a hustle mentality, whose goal of earning $5,000 takes a turn when a quirky gelatinous alien appears. Through a mix of lo-fi musical numbers and deadpan humour, Billy must rescue Donut and his family from the nefarious plans of the Dolphin Groves Juice Company. Featuring a voice cast of beloved oddball comedy stars, the film embraces a delightfully bizarre atmosphere. It all swirls into a dreamy coming-of-age story packed with heart, humour, and banger musical numbers.

Julian Glander has made a name for himself with his distinctive, colourful 3D animation style, which he’s showcased everywhere from video games to the pages of The New Yorker. Now, he brings his unique aesthetic to his first feature film, a visionary work that transforms the abandoned swimming pools and construction sites of suburban Florida into a surreal wonderland where the magical is mundane and the mundane magical.

Boys Go to Jupiter will be preceded by the World premiere of the short film ‘Baby on Board. The Dark Web Catbot’ directed by the Dog and Rabbit collective (with Will Anderson).
